We’re nearing the end of the Olympics.  Has watching all the elite athletes made you motivated to get off the couch and achieve some goals?  If so, here are a few tips. . .

1.  Set goals using the “SMART” method.  Elite athletes often set goals that are “SMART” . . . meaning goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound.  Defining your goals that way helps ensure they’re realistic and attainable within a certain time frame.

2.  Plan.  Hitting a goal takes time and effort, and planning is an important part of that.  Sometimes even making a backup plan . . . like, “Every Thursday, I will drive to the local swimming pool and swim for 45 minutes.  If the pool is too busy or it’s closed, I will go for a 45-minute walk instead.”

3.  Make mental images.  Before running towards the vault or serving a volleyball, Olympic athletes often use mental imagery to visualize their performance and get focused.

4.  Talk positively to yourself.  Saying phrases such as “I can do it” or “I’m almost there” can help keep you motivated even when you’re not feeling your best.
